Return after a break

Restart from your present circumstances, with space to adjust.

Find out what changed

A break can change your schedule, confidence or access to equipment. Before reopening an old plan, ask what made you stop and whether that obstacle is still there. You do not have to recover a previous streak before your next action counts.

Make the first visit a reintroduction

Choose familiar activity at a comfortable level. Use the session to check equipment, practise the movements and see how you feel afterwards. Build gradually instead of trying to match a previous best immediately. If the break followed illness, injury or surgery, follow your clinician’s return-to-activity advice.

  • Choose the first session, not the entire next month.
  • Leave room to change the next session based on how the first went.
  • Keep a short note about comfort and confidence.

A common mistake

Trying to make up for time away with a punishing first session.

Try this next

Choose a familiar, manageable activity and book a low-pressure return.

Evidence & sources

NHS guidance recommends building activity gradually. Recovery after illness or injury is individual; a general guide cannot provide medical clearance.
