Compare like with like
The per-100g or per-100ml information makes it easier to compare similar products. A manufacturer’s suggested serving might be different from what you actually eat. Use both the comparison and the portion information without treating either as a judgement about the food.
Ask one useful question
You might compare fibre in two cereals, salt in two soups or an allergen statement. Start with the question that matters to you. A front-of-pack claim cannot tell you whether a product fits your whole diet.
- Choose two foods you would realistically buy.
- Find the same measurement on both labels.
- Check the ingredients and allergen information where relevant, then consider price and preference.
A common mistake
Comparing one product’s small serving with another product’s per-100g values.
